About Us

The Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing is one of the several ministries responsible for the execution of Government programmes. Its establishment dates from the time of Ghana's Independence in 1957. The name of the ministry has gone through several changes. In the past year, water has received a lot of attention and subsequently the name of the ministry was changed from Ministry of Works and Housing to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, (MWRWH).

The MWRWH has responsibility for foundation and monitoring of policy relating to water supply and housing. The Ministry has two Directorates. Water and Housing, and a number of Divisions. The Policy objectives of the ministry are achieved through its sector agencies, namely: CWSA, GWCL and WRC.

The Water Directorate is located within the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and was established in February 2004.

Its main Objectives are:

  1. Setting water policies for the country
  2. Inter-sector and Sub-sector coordination
  3. Donor and NGO coordination at National Level
  4. Sourcing of funds and coordination of budgets
  5. Coordination of sector investment plans
  6. Propose appropriate legislation, in consultation with the sector agencies
  7. Advocacy for the sector
  8. Monitoring and evaluation
